Shirt project
this week we were set a brand new project in FDP called folk. really love the sound of this project and ive already done quite abit of research.
on tuesday we learnt the art of flat drawing with sarah lees. it was quite funny when sarah handed round these handouts which had professional flat drawings on which all happened to be of new look garments - i work at new look and recognized most it, i was even wearing one of the shirts pictured! strange!

Adobe Illustration Exercise
we learnt how to use illustrator in jamie's IT session. i've used it before so i found it quite easy. just learning all the shortcuts is the difficult bit!!!

Organic Projecttask: organic project , complete a sketch book , mood board and final piece in two days.
i loved the project but found the 2 day time limit really tough. i was pleased with my initial research and concept. i started by investigating organic architecture because i didn't just want to go for the obvious and do plants and flowers, my research at this stage was really inspiring i had loads of designs and ideas going through my head and set about doing my mood board. i looked at the collections of Christopher Kane, Lanvin, Emanuel Ungaro, Givenchy and Balenciaga and gain these were extremley inspiring and gve me loads of ideas. this is totally my kind of project. ive studied textiles since year 9 at school and subsequently alot of my design work is very heavily textile influenced. i love working and experimenting with pleating and fabric manipulation so this was a lovely project.
the top section of my piece is based on the organic architecture images i looked at in my research. by pleating the fabric one way with two lines of stitching and then pleating the fabric between the lines in the opposite direction i created a very structured, formal effect to the floay silk fabric - basically the opposite effect of organic architecture, where the intention is to take a hard structured form and soften it.
the back section is directly inspired by an alexander mcqueen dress. the back is pleated strips of lace gathered together to form a bustle shape. the overall effect links to the ruffles of the bird feathers which i looked into with my research.
im pleased with my outcome as far as my design board and final piece are concerned -but my sketch book needs alot of work, i just run out of time - time managment is definatly an area i need to work on!

start construction
Starting Pattern Cutting and Construction
Friday
Pattern cutting, i absolutely love it! we were modeling on the stand today and i much prefer this to the flat patterns as you can see the formation of the structure your trying to achieve. i felt like i picked the process up pretty quickly and i could get my head around this better than the flat patterns. i need to complete the drawing.
Thursday
Construction - i ended the day with a headache! construction is really hard. i've used a sewing machine since i was in year 9 at school but an industrial machine is sooo different. all my seam samples need re doing as they are either wrong or rubbish - or both. the overlocker is to fast and i was nearly burned by the steam press! not a good day!
Wednesday
had the library induction today - i thought it was going to be extremely boring however it did turn out to be quite useful learning about all the online resources.
in the afternoon we met steve the other computer guy, the lesson wasn't what i expected as the timetable lists the lesson as being illustrator - so i figured it would be that rather than InDesign but it was good to find out the basics of how the InDesign program worked.
Tuesday
*notes need writing up*
our IT session with jamie was cancelled in the afternoon so we only have PPRD with tilly and sarah this morning. we discussed the course layout and structure and looked at the marking format which is good to know - i was however disappointed to find out that at the end of the course we will only come out with a pass mark rather than a mark which represents our pass level, which at this very very early stage makes me certain ill go on to complete the BA fashion final year.
we discussed the fashion debate we will be taking part in in a couple of weeks. my role is the whip!lol!

Mondayhaving done all my research and compiled all my ideas over the weekend i was able to just go ahead and get on with my mood board. i was really pleased with the final outcome, i felt it really conveyed the sense of spice. when i initially began my research i focused on the aesthetics of india. i looked into india architecture costume and print, this i feel features heavily in my mood board. as far as the fashion influences on my board i referred back to the indian base and looked at embellishment and intricate embroidery. in the fabric provided i was lucky to find an embroided fabric which i cut away around the stitch therefore revealing the print images behind. having reviewed my final outcome and that of other students i was pleased with mine however i feel in future making my mood boards more structured and formal will make my design work more professional.

first proper week
First Proper Week
FridayDay off. researched for my mood board - changed my mind again im now doing spice...for definate now, ive got some really nice images together ready for monday.
Thursday
im going to loooove thursday and fridays. pattern cutting and construction. loved it. really well explained, even my dad would have understood what to do! im way to much of a perfectionist though. it took me for ever and i was fretting over wether or not i was slicing a piece of the drawn pencil line of my pattern - it really didn't matter but i wanted it crazily precise! i was really pleased with the outcome and i cant wait for next week!
Wednesday
Day off. Pay day...went shopping...spent far to much money...bought a nice top.
Tuesday
PPRD - still cant remember what it stands for but seems like its gonna be very usefull as we get further in to the course. first session however started with the name game - i hate the name game! first played this in year 7, first drama lesson at secondary school - back then i was "jumping jenelle" i had to spend the entire lesson jumping up and down! didn't make the same mistake again! i was "just jenelle" this time around - i know boring but other than "jolly" you try and think of word that goes with jenelle and doesn't involve jumping!
afternoon session was IT. first task powerpoint - easy, straightfowad powerpoint...um not so easy...well not on an apple mac it isn't! i couldn't even figure out how to copy and paste from the internet!lol! got there in the end! second task start a blog....Done!
Monday
First proper week, finally getting down to some work! i have a feeling im going to love the fashion design principles section of this course. the task is to complete an A3 mood board on one of the words - CLASSICAL, SPICE, SURREAL, ROCOCCO. spent most of the day in the library - i think im going to do Surreal.
the afternoon is spent looking at everyones holiday projects - they were all amazing. i was sooo glad we didn't have to present the project to the whole group, im usually fine with presenting work but not this piece. some of it was to personal and some of it was stupid!lol! oh yeah - surreals too hard im gonna be doing classical.
